Q and not U – “A Line in the Sand” | dangerhazzard
My friend Levi uncovered this mystic video from one of those Q and not U shows I mentioned earlier. This was at one of the only all ages venues we could cobble together in Cheyenne, WY, called Club Drak’s. It was an empty warehouse adorned with thrifted paintings that was undergoing work from the father of our friend/bandmate, nestled in a neighborhood on the east side of town.
Q and not U played, along with Antelope (featuring members of, at the time, El Guapo) and Black Eyes. In this video you’ll get to see Chris dance around with a lampshade on his head and the song evolve into a percussive jam session with the members of Black Eyes. If you can bear to watch the full 8 minutes, you’ll hear youthful, primal shouting well up, with chants of “Encore! Encore!” coming from all of us.
It was for Q and not U, arguably the best live band to play the venue, but also for the venue itself. This was the last show ever thrown at Club Drak’s, and only looking back now at how precarious a “scene” is, especially to high schoolers, it makes sense to hear that kind of reaction.
There were other venues, and other bands, of course. And I’m sure now there still are some industrious kids fed up with all the good bands playing in Fort Collins or Denver, and thinking, “Why the fuck can’t we just do this? What’s so wrong with our shithole of a town?” And really, there isn’t, at least from that perspective. You can throw your favorite show, because when you’re young, you can do anything.
